Within the village is a post office and village shop providing basic provisions and some local specialties. The Piddle Inn, is just a minute's walk away and provides a warm welcome and good food - as recommended by locals and visitors alike. The village gets its extraordinary name from being on the River Piddle, and its assessment for thirty hides at Domesday. Piddletrenthide has one of the finest village churches in Dorset with a splendid 15th century tower and gruesome gargoyles. The south doorway and piers of the chancel arch are Norman. Cerne Abbas, overseen by the legendary Cerne Giant lies a short drive away and the county town of Dorchester is around 8 miles away and has a great combination of shopping, historical and visitor attractions. Around a 30 minute drive away is the coast at Weymouth which boasts a long and sandy beach along with traditional beach entertainments such as donkey rides and Punch and Judy.
